Editorial Guidelines for Orange County Business Listings
Understand who qualifies for OCDIR, what makes a useful listing, how automatic publication works, and how to request corrections.
OCDIR Business Listing Standards
OCDIR lists real businesses operating in or meaningfully serving Orange County, California. Business descriptions, contact details, locations, and service areas should be factual, useful, and current. Creating a basic listing is free. Valid new submissions publish automatically after required-field validation, duplicate checks, and spam protection; this does not mean OCDIR has independently verified each company or its owner.
Who Can Be Listed in the Orange County Directory?
Which businesses qualify for an OCDIR listing?
Listings must represent real businesses operating in or meaningfully serving Orange County. Out-of-county businesses must accurately describe any Orange County service area without claiming a fake local office.
Can an out-of-county business be listed?
Yes, if it genuinely serves customers in Orange County. State the actual business location and relevant service area rather than claiming an Orange County office that does not exist.
What should a business description contain?
Explain the company's services, who it serves, and details that help local visitors understand the business. The Add a Business form requires an About your business description of at least 300 characters. Use original, accurate information rather than generic keyword repetition, unverifiable claims, or misleading contact details.
Submitting and Publishing Business Listings
Are new business listings manually approved?
Valid submissions publish automatically without manual administrator approval or business verification. Required-field validation, duplicate checks, and spam protection apply before successful submission. Misleading or abusive content can be removed. Publication does not imply independent factual or ownership verification.
What happens if a business is already listed?
Do not create a duplicate profile. Use the existing business page's ownership claim process, or request a correction through the OCDIR contact process. Duplicate checks are part of the submission validation.
Does publication mean OCDIR endorses a business?
No. A public directory profile is not an endorsement, professional certification, proof of licensing, or independent verification. Visitors should contact businesses directly to confirm important details.
Accuracy, Ownership and Corrections
How can a business owner correct or remove information?
Business owners can request corrections, ownership review, or removal. Suspicious or outdated records may be held for further review. Include the public profile URL and the changes requested in a message through the Contact or Business Corrections & Removal page.
Can I edit another existing company's profile by submitting a paid listing?
No. Access to an existing business’s editing or billing controls remains protected. An ownership claim requires independent review. A new listing submission or subscription payment does not itself grant control over an existing profile.
Business Links and the Optional Featured Plan
How are business links and directory relevance handled?
Search and category relevance are based on business information. Basic listings are free, and outbound user-supplied links retain ugc and nofollow attributes. These link attributes do not constitute a guarantee of search ranking.
What does the optional $29/month plan change?
New advertisers can create a listing and purchase an optional $29/month automatically renewing listing refresh without business verification. Access to an existing business’s editing or billing controls remains protected. The plan provides directory-specific paid benefits; see the full Featured Business Plan guide and the official Plans page for the complete terms.
